Dear Colleagues, Dear Friends
Following the success of the previous editions, the HPB Unit of the Surgical Department, Centro Hospitalar de S. João, Oporto Medical School, is organizing the VII Internacional Course and IV Thomas E Starzl Symposium on HPB Surgery.
This edition, to be held in Porto on February 5-7, 2015, intends to gather, under the overal topic “On the Shoulders of Giants”, some of the most outstanding “pionneers” in HPB and Transplant Surgery in a honouring symposium, that will simultaneously provide a retrospective of the major advances in this field as viewed by the protagonists and a glimpse of the future in the eyes of their legacy.
In that sense, we are privileged to confirm the participation of Profs. Thomas Starzl, Henri Bismuth, Moreno-Gonzalez, Yuji Nimura, Masatoshi Makuuchi, Paul McMaster and Leslie Blumgart, as well as of some of their most prominent disciples, that are themselves, today, notorious personalities in HPB and Transplantation Surgery.
Although “honouring the Pionneers” is the main objective of this year’s Course, the “scientific” aspects have not been overlooked, with panels addressing the “state of the Art” in the pluridisciplinary treatment of hepatocelular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and metastatic liver disease.
As in previous editions, we have planned an associated program for nurses, with an International Course in the technical, logistic and organizational O.R. aspects of the modern HPB surgery.
This VII Course, and IV Thomas E. Starzl Symposium, intends to reunite and honour, in an unique event and in a beautiful, warm and historical location, some of the living legends in our profession, as well as the schools they have created.
The purpose of this endeavour, the quality of the invited Faculty, along with the scientific interest of the proposed topics, are more than enough reasons to join us in what we expect, will be a memorable event.
